Joseph’s Personal Style
What with regards to dressing well, what do you appreciate the most? What is your personal style?
Having a functional, no brainer wardrobe. Knowing that blue, brown, white and grey will always work with each other, I focus my wardrobe on those four colours and then I build around them. I tend to naturally gravitate towards those colours and they’ve never let me down. Suits aside, I don’t think you can beat grey trousers, a white shirt and a blue tie: you can wear any sport coat your heart desires with that, and you’ll always look impeccable. And don’t forget the pocket square! A pocket square is the finishing touch.
Who is your personal style icon, the person or persons from whom you draw inspiration?
Paul Newman. On and off set he always dressed appropriately and with a style that was never forced. He always gave the impression that he was at ease with himself in whatever he wore. A faithful family man, patron of charitable organizations, a great actor, and a man who knew himself so well he could wear anything and never be taken for anyone else. Style should be authentic: he demonstrated this through his career and how he held himself in the public eye.
What’s your favourite music album?
Kind of Blue, by Miles Davis. It was the first record I played for my son after he was born. I’m picky about my jazz, and this is the jazz record everyone can get into. It is simply brilliant. In the car, while cooking, having a cocktail. Listen to it!
According to you, what is one essential piece of sartorial advice every many of today needs to know?
Clothes should fit: Not too loose, not too tight. This is something that takes time to get right. (I am still learning.) And make sure your shoes, if nothing else, look good before leaving in the morning. I buff mine before I head out the door!
