Three Ideal Shirt Collars

When it comes to shirting, the collar is the central focus. There are many different kinds, and while personal preference and the necessity of life are the final verdict, there are three essential options for men of distinction. Each has its merits and demerits depending on the face type of the wearer, but we leave it to every grown man to decide what best suits him! These are three essential shirt collars for the modern man!

Semi-Spread Collar

Often thought to be the standard collar, the Semi-Spread collar actually suits men with narrow, short or slender faces best. With points closer together there is still enough space for an interesting tie knot, though ties of thinner silk are ideal for the Four-In-Hand Knot that is this collar’s natural match. Gentlemen with rounder heads and larger necks should avoid the semi-spread collar since it is not usually in proportion to one’s physicality.

Full-Spread Collar

The true Clusier standard, the Full Spread collar (sometimes referred to as the English-spread) is the most balanced collar there is. Not too wide, nor too narrow. There is more room between the two collar points to accommodate slightly larger knots (such as the Pratt Knot, Half-Windsor & Double-Four-In-Hand), and this collar suits the vast majority of men.

Extreme-Spead Collar

This collar is having its moment now, especially among Italians. The Extreme-Spead Collar (or Cutaway Collar) is a Clusier favourite for the simple reason that it is utterly simple, and a noticeable mark of distinction. While you can’t go wrong with the Cutaway collar, it is not everyone’s cup of tea, nor will it necessarily look natural on every man. Men with squared heads and angular faced are better off with the Full Spread. As for the rest of you, give this shirt collar a try! Others will notice the difference if you don’t!
